Brooklyn Minds is a welcoming sex positive facility. We work with a variety of different people within this community, including sex workers. Our providers attempt to fully understand what it is like to be inside the patient's mind. Many of our employees are members of this community, therefore we have a similar understanding of some of the struggles that the LGBTQIA+ and Sex Positive communities do encounter.
As a facility that specializes in youth and young adults, we understand the importance of creating a supportive and affirming environment. A non-affirming environment has been proven to increase risky sexual behavior, risk of depression or other mental health problems, the likelihood of substance use issues, and could result in homelessness or suicide.
There is an increased rate of suicide for those that identify as LGBTQIA+ and an even higher risk for specifically transgender youth. In the 2011 National Transgender Discrimination Survey, which surveyed 6,450 transgender individuals, 41% of respondents reported attempting suicide compared to 1.6% of the general population.
Common issues within these populations are thoughts of suicide, acts of self-harm, depression, feelings of rejection/alienation, isolation, social difficulties, traumatic events, substance use, bullying, and/or feelings of shame.
It is important as a provider to be open and curious about how the person views themselves while reaffirming their authentic identity. There are many micro-aggressions that can adversely impact treatment and being aware of these is important. In addition to supporting the individual, it is also important to strengthen their understanding of other peoples thoughts and feelings. This can help minimize difficulties in social or familial settings.
Brooklyn Minds understands the complexities of relationships and the difficulties that can come from being in an ethically non-monogamous, polyamorous, or non-traditional relationship. Mentalization Based Treatment helps our providers maintain a curious stance and encourages a deeper understanding of how each member within the relationship may feel. Understanding complexities in relationships is an important aspect of treatment in order to understand the full picture of the issues.
In, addition to non-traditional relationships, some of our practitioners are also knowledgable in Kink, BDSM, sex work, and other sex related platforms.
